private pool vibes

When the world felt like it was burning down and we all were at home (most of us single women ALONE) I wanted to be sure I still took the time to celebrate myself on my birthday. In my early twenties and before that I spent my birthdays in the state that I lived in and I would like to say, my birthdays got a lot better when I decided to travel instead. This particular birthday I was able to have both of my best friends on one trip!

 I chose a resort in Mexico called Dreams Tulum Resort & Spa, which I will say was 50% cheaper during the early pandemic days. We used CheapCaribbean.com which allowed for us to have an all inclusive experience of which included the flight, resort, and transportation to and from the airport. When we booked, people were traveling at a much lower rate due to the increased fear of the pandemic so they were throwing deals at us. We received a $200 coupon from the resort which we could use to have a private dinner on the beach, and a complimentary Newlywed & Anniversary package that includes one in room breakfast and a free upgrade to the Deluxe Ocean View room. Of course I had to use everything they were offering so I told the people at check-in that I was in a throuple and that I would love to treat both of my partners to a romantic dinner on the beach and an anniversary brunch (yes, I was dead serious & yes it worked)! Although one of my besties was in the room next door they were still able to work it out.

What Happened? Trip Highlights

What went well?

The resort we chose was top tier! Our rooms came with Ipads on our bedside to order turn-down service, check out the resorts’ daily itinerary, make reservations for the restaurants, and book excursions. It felt so luxurious and exclusive everyday including the fact that there were little to no other guests at the resort.

The collective decision not to do anything outside of the resort supplied activities! Instead of us leaving the resort and facing Covid mandates like curfews and mask restrictions we decided to retreat into a vacationer’s reality where we got the chance to forget about Covid and just enjoy the poolside vibes while overlooking the ocean.

Our throuple romantic dinner on the beach! The hotel created a candlelit dinner with a rose petals trail, rose folded napkins, and a romantically lit log teepee with a table and three chairs. We were able to order a variety of surf and turf options, and to our surprise, they delivered two boxed bottles of Don Julio and Patron. Of course, I didn’t bother opening them; I simply added them to my suitcase to take home. No use in drinking the bottles if everything on the resort including the liquor was prepaid and bottomless!

What could’ve gone better?

The entertainment at the resort after hours could have been better but because of the low staff and other Covid related issues everything closed down after 6pm. It was like even though you have bottomless alcohol and the bar is open late there will be no music and the pool areas are closed.

What we didn’t plan for but turned out great?

One of my best friends and I love a good breakfast so we woke up every morning and enjoyed breakfast together. We tried the seafood soup at one of the restaurants and we were HOOKED! I’m not really sure what it was that made that soup so good but we refused to have breakfast anywhere else on the resort specifically because they didn’t have the soup.

I still have Tulum on my list of places to visit because I didn’t get the chance to actually experience everything. I have a few friends that have visited and they continue to rave about how that area has expanded tourism and nightlife so I can’t remove it from my travel list just yet!
